Portrait of interdisciplinary artist Sing Xing

Biography

Sing Xing is an interdisciplinary artist working across long-scroll drawing, performance, moving image, photography, installation, sound, writing and participatory theatre. She explores how bodies encounter materials, places and other people, and how an action leaves traces, alters perception or creates a shared experience. Her current focus is Pajamas Theatre, an ongoing participatory artwork that began on 28 November 2025.

In Sing’s work, scrolls are walked across, carried or set alight; discarded materials become structures for sound and weight; and personal objects open paths into stories and improvisation. Actions and musical collaborations in her early drawings resonate with later spatial installations and collective devising. Curatorial projects, artist books and collaborations also bring the work into different settings for encounter and exchange. Sing Xing previously worked under the name Scynge Xing, which appears in documentation of her earlier artworks, exhibitions and brand collaborations. Sing received an MFA in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design, The New School, New York, in 2018, and a BA in English Literature and Arts from The University of the South in 2016.

Artist statement

My work often begins with a concrete action: moving across a scroll, carrying material into the desert, walking into the street at night, or inviting someone to enter a situation in their own way. As the action unfolds, wind, light, sound and other people’s responses change the work. I follow these changes. Drawing, moving image, installation and theatre offer me different ways of working. Sometimes materials retain traces of a body’s passage; sometimes a work takes place through touch, listening and improvisation. I am interested in how a person senses their own situation, and in how different experiences meet when people enter the same space. I am currently bringing these questions into Pajamas Theatre. Night-time gatherings, stories, sound and bodily actions become its materials. I want to make room for different forms of expression and allow the work to change with the people taking part.

Practice

Several concerns recur across Sing’s works: how bodies leave traces, how environments alter perception, and how people shape a work through actions and responses. These concerns intertwine across years and media, returning in new situations.

Body, trace and material

From long scrolls to actions in the desert, movement, layering, erasure and burning keep materials in flux. Images, fragments and films retain different parts of an event.

Night, environment and perception

Street sounds enter a room and air holds up a blue inflatable form. Environments change bodily perception and the ways one looks and stays.

Improvisation, response and collective creation

Collaborations between music and drawing, installations that can be entered, materials that sound when touched and collectively devised theatre all bring another response into the work. The artist’s actions and others’ choices interact within a particular situation.
